New London Architecture

CLOSED: Sketchbook

Start: 18 May 2011 - 00:00
End: 24 June 2011 - 00:00

The Bldg Centre, 26 Store St, London WC1E 7BT, UK

This exhibition documents a retrospective collection of architectural drawings by Steve Humphreys, director of Weston Williamson Architects. The collection spans 25 years of work and documents the development of ideas and concepts in their earliest forms.
The importance of illustration remains a constant and vital tool in communicating an approach to architecture, where the notions of form, materiality and structure are explored freely in the making of marks on paper.

This personal collection illustrates and questions the value of drawing in an industry where computerised technology dominates the workload. Is sketching becoming a dying art form and has the communication of a concept become an over analysed process?

The conventional systems of computing rely on detail, they focus the thought process internally and the power to think in an unconstrained way may therefore be contained. However the process of making simple marks by hand provides the freedom to think outside the limits and order of the pixel.

The true value of drawing is not the sketch itself, but in its ability to convey the idea or concept expressed. This may be expressed in the energy or movement of the line, the mood, or detailing.

These drawings illustrate not only the skill of sketching, but more so they aim to communicate the importance of mark making in capturing the ideas and concepts of the architect.
