Donald Insall Associates is an award-winning architectural practice and historic buildings consultancy, specialising in the care, repair and adaptation of historic buildings, as well as designing new buildings for sensitive sites. For over 60 years, we have pioneered a creative approach to conservation, centred on the belief that change is continuous and buildings are, in effect, ‘alive’.

We believe that historic buildings should be constantly maintained and sensitively adapted so that they might be lastingly used and enjoyed. Our work is underpinned by rigorous analysis of the built environment and we place a high value on specialist expertise. Members have comprehensive knowledge of architectural history; traditional building materials and repair techniques; modern standards and technologies. While every project is unique, our aim is always creative conservation, which means balancing the preservation of a building or place with the need for intervention to ensure its continued vitality.

We are distinguished by our combination of specialist expertise and creativity. Our contribution to the process of managing change in the historic environment is authoritative and respected by local authorities, Historic England and other stakeholders. Our work has been recognised with over 200 awards, including the RIBA, Civic Trust and Europa Nostra awards.
