COP26 Build Better Now and other events on climate change to explore this month

Monday 01 November 2021

The COP26 climate summit is finally upon us, between 31 October and 12 November, bringing countries and different parties together in Glasgow to accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis. Responsible for 40 per cent of the UK’s overall carbon footprint, the built environment plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and building resilience to extreme climactic conditions. As one of over 40 partners, NLA has joined the UKGBC’s initiative to deliver Build Better Now, a Built Environment Virtual Pavilion at COP26 to raise the voice of the built environment sector during the climate talks.

The event to kick off the BuildBetterNow series was led by NLA and UKGBC and has provided a strong case for cities to be empowered in leading the climate agenda.

Hearing from NLA, C40, UKGBC, Urban Green Council in New York, Centre for Liveable Cities, Ministry of National Development in Singapore and Nakuru County Kenya, the panel presented a strong case for how climate actions can be achievable in cities and how these interventions bring many co-benefits such as job creation, addressing inequality, cleaning the air, and making cities more liveable. Bringing the sector together and cities together to share knowledge continues to be critical in advancing solutions and speed up climate actions.

A fascinating virtual exhibition part of BuildBetterNow explores in more details some of these themes and present some remarkable projects across the world that are pushing the bar in environmental design.

This year's UN's conference will address carbon emissions from buildings for the first time at a day dedicated to the built environment on Thursday 11 November. The Cities, Regions & Built Environment Day will take place during the second week of the conference.

On the last day of COP26, Friday 12 November, NLA will be livestreaming from Glasgow a talk hearing from the UK High-Level Climate Action Champion team about the latest on the climate negotiations and what they mean for the built environment sector. If you want to have an insight on COP26 book your free place to the webinar COP26 Briefing: what next for the climate agenda?

Other events this month include Resilient cities: preparing for climate events in the UK, on 4 November, bringing together UK cities for a discussion about how cities can plan and adapt to climate change while also massively driving carbon emissions. And on Wednesday 17 we will come together in person at the NLA Gallery in Coal Drops Yard for a Pecha Kucha hearing about Climate-Proofing Design: Projects and Concepts PechaKucha, providing lessons on how can we embed climate adaption and mitigation into city design.

The climate agenda is central to NLA’s year-round programme of events, research and activities. For the past year, the NLA Expert Panel on Net Zero has provided strong climate leadership, supporting NLA in developing clear ambitions. The NLA Resilient London report, launched in September 2021, discussed priorities for climate resilience and built environment adaptation, while our most downloaded report to date, NLA report Zero Carbon London, gathered industry views to set priorities for a climate roadmap for London.
