Reed MIDEM has moved to cancel this year’s edition of MIPIM in Cannes, citing the best interests of the health and wellbeing of all of those involved. But it has also proposed a Paris-based ‘MIPIM Real Estate Summit’ in September and a free digital platform from next month for all MIPIM 2020 participants.

The moves, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic having initially forced the organisers to seek a postponement of the March event to 2-5 June this year, means that the next Cannes show will now take place next year, from 16-19 March 2021.

For cities and other exhibitors, the early indications from Reed MIDEM are that it will offer a partial refund on fees paid for MIPIM 2020 or the option to transfer participation (by way of exhibition space and / or delegate passes) to MIPIM 2021, while compensation levels for each will be the subject of further negotiation.

MIPIM was initially postponed following the withdrawal from the event of predominantly UK-based large companies including agents such as CBRE, Knight Frank, and JLL, while since that time cities across Europe have gone into lockdown to try and prevent the coronavirus from spreading.

Reed MIDEM said MIPIM is ‘transforming’ in 2020 into ‘a two-day, Paris-based gathering of real estate and innovative technology leaders in September and a new online experience, MIPIM Connect, available year-round’. More details will be available in the coming weeks.

“We appreciate the support and feedback we received from many MIPIM customers and are grateful for their patience and understanding’, said Ronan Vaspart, MIPIM Director, Reed MIDEM on the group’s website. ‘Together with our partners in Cannes, we will prepare an excellent MIPIM for next year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Cannes in March 2021 and, in the meantime, we hope people stay connected and, above all, safe.’
