NLA has teamed up with Haptic Architects and Central for a study tour of Oslo to showcase the city's change from a traditional harbour to a vibrant urban waterfront.
NLA has teamed up with Haptic Architects and Central for this study tour of Norway’s capital city. Oslo has undergone an enviable and dramatic transformation in recent years, evolving from a traditional harbour into a vibrant urban waterfront for living, working and playing. Through its single comprehensive plan, The Fjord City Strategy, and its ambitious target of being the first large emissions-free city by 2030, Oslo is on its way to becoming the world’s favourite compact city.
To understand the city’s approach, and see the results, you are invited to join Tomas Stokke, Director of Haptic Architects, Erling Fossen, Urban Doctor at Greater Oslo and Patricia Brown, Central, for an immersive ‘Oslo Masterclass’.
This focused masterclass will be a chance to hear how this transformation was achieved, and how the city has become a pioneer in retrofit and upcycling, climate resilience and creating a human-centric urban development that is on its way to become car free.
You will join colleagues from across the private and public sectors to explore some of the key transformation areas and projects and engage with the movers and shakers, policymakers, developers, and designers shaping Oslo’s future.
Outline itinerary:
Monday, September 16th:
Explore Fornebu, a peninsula outside Oslo, which has attracted headquarters of Norway's largest companies. Recent plans for extending the metro to Fornebu have sparked new developments, including 3 new metro stations and potentially 15,000 new housing units and 40,000 workspaces.
Tuesday, September 17th:
Tour the redevelopment of Oslo’s fjord and harbour areas, covering an area of 226 hectares and divided into 11 sub-areas. The project aims to open up areas facing the sea for future-oriented urban development, integrating housing, recreation, and commerce with a 9-kilometre harbour promenade. We will review the key areas of Bjørvika, Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, alongside some of the key new buildings.
Wednesday, September 18th:
Explore inner-city regeneration projects, including Tullinkvartalet, Regjeringskvartalet, and Vulkan. Experience KA13, a new office building in Tullinkvartalet constructed with 70% reused materials from over 20 donor buildings. Visit Vulkan, an award-winning transformation project converting a former rubber factory into a vibrant mixed-use area.
The cost of participation in the Oslo Masterclass is £300/person + VAT, which covers organisers' time. Participants are responsible for flights, accommodation, and meals. We will secure preferential hotel rates in central Oslo.
