Hawley Wharf

Built

Hawley Wharf transforms a neglected site in Camden into a vibrant new destination whilst enhancing the inherent identity of the area, utilising the existing railway viaducts.

Eight new buildings – set amongst the existing railway viaducts – and two refurbished buildings, including the Grade II Listed 1 Hawley Road, are arranged around three major new public spaces and several new pedestrian routes which reconnect the site with its neighbourhood, balancing the needs of both residents and visitors.

This project is featured alongside our Public London: Activating the City insight study. The publication, exhibition and online project directory explore what constitutes a successful and democratic public realm today, the role of co‑creation and partnerships, and how we can ensure that places are fit‑for‑purpose in the long term.

NEW LONDON AWARDS 2022

Shortlisted in MASTERPLANS AND AREA STRATEGIES category

Hawley Wharf transforms an underused piece of city in Camden Town into a busy mixed-use development, enhancing the area’s strong identity and creating a vibrant new quarter for the benefit of the local community, users and visitors alike.

In March 2012, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris was appointed as Architect to develop a masterplan in consultation with the local community and other stakeholders. The scheme, consented unanimously only 9 months later, consists of eight new buildings set around three distinctive new public spaces, existing railway viaducts and two refurbished buildings including the Grade II Listed 1 Hawley Road. The project provides affordable and private homes, a primary school, workplace and retail units, workshops, cinema and new flexible open market buildings.

Vote for this project in the ‘People’s Choice Award’. The voting deadline is 1 November 2022.
