Karen Burns is co-founder and CEO of Fyma, a startup based in the tech capital of Tallinn, whose AI turns any CCTV camera into a smart sensor to capture real time GDPR-compliant data. She talks to Peter Murray how this can be used to create smarter cities.

MORE ABOUT FYMA - TECHNOLOGY SPOTLIGHT

Fyma is an artificial intelligence product that can turn any standard surveillance camera into an AI-powered data tool that allows you to identify objects and track their movements and behavior.  Fyma can be set up locally  in minutes with no infrastructure cost. Fyma can tell users anything about their data, for example how many, and what type of vehicles are using a new highway overpass? Is the local sewage facility operating within regulations? What time do most kids get home from school in Paris. Users simply draw lines and shapes on their existing video feed, and we can count and analyse what crosses the lines.

With Fyma’s true video analytics we can track patterns of movement of hundreds of objects in the camera view, as well as their size, shape, speed, and direction of movement.

Quite often, artificial intelligence is portrayed as something that only very high-tech companies can use, with the technology being so complicated that only the most tech-savvy individuals can use it. Fyma makes it possible for anyone to use AI, with easy-to-use software that is intuitive and simple.

Creating Valuable Parking Analytics

Fyma’s advanced data collection is not limited to in-store retail use, with the AI capable of serving many uses. For example, Ülemiste City installed Fyma in their car parking lots in 2020 with the goal of improving accessibility for both cars and pedestrians alike.

The experiment was a success, with our AI capable of understanding the car park layout in real-time and collecting valuable data including the number of cars driving into parking lots, amount of car traffic and footfall, how often and how long individuals stay on-premises, and the rate of which individuals visited a shopping center or area depending on the time of day, weekday, season.

The experiment was so successful that it was later found that Fyma helped reduce the time that drivers spent searching for parking spaces on average by 5 minutes per day, effectively saving 2 metric tons of CO2 emissions per month.

Fast and Effective Crowd Monitoring

In September 2021, Fyma partnered with Dutch company NS Stations to assist with crowd monitoring during a Formula 1 event in Zandvoort. Taking feeds from cameras mounted on drones, Fyma was able to monitor event attendee patterns in order to ensure that the event did not become overcrowded. The goal was to map the people flows from the F1 circuit to one of the train stations. Fyma AI was able to monitor and predict the flow of people, evaluate crowd safety in real time, and spot the build up of large groups.

Because of Fyma’s advanced artificial intelligence, NS Stations was able to better monitor crowds, and make for a better experience for the event attendees.

Providing Valuable Data to Retail Stores

Fyma can also help with data collection at retail stores. By using artificial intelligence to monitor customer behavior in a store, we can help provide businesses with valuable data about their customers and what they would like to see from a business.

During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Fyma was used by the shopping center Viru Keskus, the largest shopping and entertainment center in Estonia. Fyma assisted with gathering data related to user footfall and determined the number of visitors that made purchases based on several different variables, including their gender, age, and day of the week. As a result, the Centre gathered valuable insights including which stores they entered upon entering the building, how long they stayed, and even whether or not they adhered to social distancing rules. This allowed the Centre to adapt in-store advertising, promotions, and activities to correspond more closely with demographics of shoppers at different times throughout the week.

Serious about Personal Privacy and Security

Despite the many benefits that AI-powered cameras offer businesses, many people are still wary of potential issues related to privacy and security. Fyma does not infringe on personal privacy or security, with our company being 100% compliant with GDPR. Fyma doesn’t track personal data such as face detection, and doesn’t save video feeds. Offering Considerable Benefits at an Affordable Price

Not only is Fyma incredibly versatile in its abilities, it’s also very straightforward and easy to use. Less tech-savvy business owners have no problem setting up Fyma, as no additional hardware is needed for the AI system -- it can simply be used with current video surveillance cameras.

Fyma is a future-proof system because it does not require constant upgrades or maintenance down the line. As a smart AI system, Fyma learns over time and adapts, getting better through use. Additionally, unlike other surveillance camera systems, Fyma offers multiple features packed into one product; with object detection and tracking, location analysis, and behavioral analysis.

One of the biggest complaints about artificial intelligence in the past has been the cost associated with its use. With many businesses already struggling after the pandemic, expensive AI software, or new hardware are not affordable. That’s why Fyma aims to change all of that by providing its very affordable services across Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. Fyma is one of the most accessible surveillance software solutions on the market today, despite being one of the most advanced technologies available.
