This applied not only to London’s traditional outdoor spaces — its urban squares, such a distinctive element of the historic fabric of the Great Estates — but also streets and roads, via the Mayor and TfL’s ‘Healthy Streets’ initiative, which seeks to prioritise walking, cycling and public transport through holistic placemaking principles that aim to create not only a healthier city — through increased physical activity and improved air quality — but also a safer and cleaner one.
