How does Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park achieve its green legacy?

Hosting the Games requires significant investment by central government and large-scale infrastructure. Since 2003, the International Olympic Committee has been considering the legacy of the Games in the host cities: what remains after the Games? This legacy can be diverse: social, urban, economic, and environmental. To achieve this objective, a long-term reflection is needed to serve the organisation of the Games during a given period and to think about the adaptability of the infrastructure post-occupation of the Games.

From this perspective, the London Olympic Park was designed from the outset to be sustainable and adaptable over time. Its long-term management and its transformation in an urban park have made it a reference in terms of the green legacy of the Games. As illustrated by the creation of a Biodiversity Action Plan from the start: a first in the Olympics history. However, to meet the challenge of green legacy and the sustainability, infrastructures have also played a fundamental role: whether for transport, flood risk management or energy production.

During this Breakfast Talk, we will hear from professionals about the findings, challenges and futures of the park. How has results up to date reflected the initial plan? How the policy/plans unfold in real life practice? What roles have infrastructure and buildings played in creating this green heritage? We will look at the masterplan and policies in place and discuss their development in the coming years.
