Submissions

NLA invites submissions of London-based projects, ongoing or completed since 2015, that respond to the demand for public housing. To accompany our latest insight study which focuses on the future of public housing in London, we call for projects showcasing exemplary schemes that have been delivered by, with, or for local authorities over the last 10 years.

Eligible projects will exemplify best practice to public housing. There will have been a considered approach to delivering good quality housing that serves its residents, as well as innovative approaches to delivery models beyond the current mechanisms.

Through this feature, your project could contribute to the wellbeing of Londoners and its future generations. It could support London’s goals to meet housing demand, as well as the evolving needs of its people and its places. Selected projects will be featured in our Project Directory, an exhibition showcasing best practice, and in events and communications throughout Autumn 2025.

Submissions Deadline: Friday 25 July, 12pm

Research

NLA is exploring innovative solutions to accelerate public housing development across London. Amid a chronic housing shortage and low market confidence, how can we ensure a sustainable approach to public housing development that caters to London's growth and its future generations?

The housing need in London is 880,000 new homes over the next ten years, which includes affordable housing and the regeneration of existing estates. There is an increased demand for housing that is sustainable and ultimately viable so therefore, how housing is delivered is just as important as the number that is delivered.

Building on NLA’s 2019 report Public Housing: A London Renaissance, this insight study examines a diversity of approaches that support Local Authorities to ultimately deliver sufficient and resilient public housing. By analysing the successes and challenges of housing delivery over the last 10 years, we aim to understand the evolving role of the public sector in shaping the next cycle of housing delivery.

To achieve this, we will investigate best practice that focuses on public-private partnerships, delivering at scale and at pace, and engaging with social values. These insights will help propose future models of housing design, delivery and maintenance that are sustainable in the long-term.

Central to this effort is the dual challenge of creating affordable new homes while retrofitting existing public housing towards net-zero goals. How can we balance sustainability with affordability, ensuring housing delivery supports London's equity and prosperity?

 Research aims

·      To provide an overview of public housing projects that have been delivered by, with, or for local authorities over the last 10 years and address the UK government’s housing targets

·      To build upon NLA’s past research on public housing, exploring how sustainable approaches and best practice can transform both new developments and existing public housing estates

·      To identify policy gaps, delivery mechanisms and funding opportunities that could accelerate innovation in affordable and sustainable housing solutions
