Submissions

We're inviting submissions for infrastructure projects that are repowering the capital to showcase alongside our upcoming report, RePower London. The report examines the barriers and opportunities of decarbonising the infrastructure that drives London’s growth. This member showcase will be promoted alongside the report and will feature in our online directory, which NLA will draw from for communications and events programming building on the research post-launch.

From neighbourhood, community driven infrastructure schemes to sub-regional networks and London-wide frameworks, the showcase is open to projects and strategies across different scales. Submissions are open to strategies that are in development or underway, and projects that have been granted planning permission, are under construction, or have been completed in the last two years. We’re looking for a variety of infrastructure projects and strategies of diverse typologies and scales, showcasing infrastructure that is people-centric, place-based, and contributes to good placemaking and the modal shift to cleaner energy. Eligible projects will fall under one or more of the following categories:

  • Transport: healthy streets, cycling & wheeling, rail, bus, tram, taxi and other public transport, aviation, car/EV/AV.
  • Energy: electricity, gas, heating and cooling networks, nuclear, hydro, wind.
  • Digital: 5G, data centres, mobile, broadband.
  • Green and Blue: urban greening, Thames and canals, wastewater, biodiversity, SUDs, Green Belt, food growing.
  • Logistics: deliveries, warehousing, servicing, distribution centres, last mile hubs, logistic networks, river/rail freight.

Projects will demonstrate one or more of the following key principles of the New London Agenda:

  • Focus on Health: Capitalizes on the placemaking capacity of infrastructure delivery.
  • Plan for Future Generations: Decarbonisation of the infrastructure that runs London to deliver growth, prosperity and sustainability for future generations of Londoners.
  • Think Beyond Boundaries: A joined up approach to delivering infrastructure beyond site and borough boundaries and unlocking the wider benefits for place beyond infrastructure itself.
  • Value Diversity: Interventions that deliver several types of infrastructure at once, meeting the diverse needs of Londoners.
  • Leverage Innovation: Applies new technology and innovative approaches to accelerate the delivery and decarbonisation of infrastructure.
  • Working in Partnership: Collaboration across infrastructure providers that supports wider placemaking goals.

We are looking for exemplar projects that rethink the critical infrastructure that runs London tackling the climate emergency, promoting growth, prosperity and quality of life for Londoners.

Submissions Deadline: Friday 05 July 2024, 5pm

THE RESEARCH

Overview

Tackling climate change means radically transforming the vast network of infrastructure that runs London. Power generation, transport, industry, and buildings make up more than 60 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing the embodied and operational carbon of these assets poses serious challenges for policymakers, planners, and businesses.

Expanding on NLA's publications, "Planes, Trains and Drains", "Smarter London: How digital technologies are shaping the city", ", and “Future Streets”, Repower London examines the barriers to decarbonising the infrastructure that drives London’s growth.

Contemplating the potential of a modal shift to cleaner energy, this study takes a comprehensive, people-centric, and place-based examination of infrastructure, including its definition, delivery, and funding models.

Key Themes

The research encompasses various aspects of infrastructure under the following categories:

  • Transport: healthy streets, cycling & wheeling, rail, bus, tram, taxi and other public transport, aviation, car/EV/AV.
  • Energy: electricity, gas, heating and cooling networks, nuclear, hydro, wind.
  • Digital: 5G, data centres, mobile, broadband.
  • Green and Blue: urban greening, Thames and canals, wastewater, biodiversity, SUDs, Green Belt, food growing.
  • Logistics: deliveries, warehousing, servicing, distribution centres, last mile hubs, logistic networks, river/rail freight.

Research Aim

  • To provide an update on the latest infrastructure projects pushing the boundaries in tackling climate change on a citywide level in London
  • To build upon NLA’s past research on the topic: "Planes, Trains and Drains" (2013), "Smarter London: How digital technologies are shaping the city" (2014) and “Future Streets” (2019)
  • To identify any policy gaps which would help unlock innovation in these areas

Research Questions

  • Does the current infrastructure in London align with the requirements and aspirations of its residents and the planet?
  • How can we accelerate the necessary changes to better address these needs and aspirations?
  • What are the innovations and best practice that are coming forward to meet these priorities? And are these methods scaleable?
