The planning category is concerned with masterplans and area-wide strategies that can create entire new parts of the city. Projects in the shortlist this year demonstrated a thoughtfulness in the design and delivery of homes, high levels of amenity, sustainable measures and the reuse of formerly derelict land, innovative construction techniques, and employment along with activities encouraging interaction throughout the day and the creation of neighbourhoods where communities can come together to live, work and play. Other projects demonstrated high levels of ‘urban granularity’ and permeability, along with the integration of, inter alia, medical facilities, community centres, cycle parking and storage.

AWARDS JURY COMMENTS

Peter Murray: ‘The Bermondsey Project was the one that stood above the rest, and it is interesting because it is being developed by one of the historic estates for the long term, and with patient capital. The community is the beneficiary of that’
