London Borough of Southwark

London Borough of Southwark

From the resurgence of Bankside as London’s new cultural quarter, nearly 20 years ago, to the recent transformation of Peckham, Southwark is a borough which delivers on its big ambitions.

Including estate regeneration, such as Aylesbury, Southwark is committed to affordable housing and is building 11,000 new council homes - more than any other borough. And, with three of London's biggest opportunity areas; Elephant and Castle, Canada Water and Old Kent Road, some 40% of the borough is currently being regenerated.

Over the last decade, Elephant and Castle has been transformed. The huge Elephant Park development is almost finished and last year (2020) work began on the new town centre. The next phase will be the northern quadrant. The Canada Water Masterplan is being delivered at pace, and a regeneration programme that will deliver 20,000 new homes is just getting started at Old Kent Road.

The groundwork that Southwark has laid over the past decade puts the borough in a much stronger position than most to bounce back after COVID.

The Southwark approach to development will continue to be centred on people, livelihoods, wellbeing and opportunities rather than on bricks and mortar or glass and steel and the council is determined to ensure that regeneration delivers for all of Southwark's many communities.
